Are you a nature lover searching for a volunteer opportunity near Verandah? Then Manatee Park might be the perfect place for you!
Located a mile from the Verandah front gate, Manatee Park offers a variety of opportunities to help visitors from around the country and around the world learn about manatees, butterflies, and Florida ecosystems. Training is provided for all volunteers, along with field trips and educational workshops.
When the water temperature in the Gulf drops below 68 degrees F, manatees swim upriver looking for warmer water. The FPL plant on Palm Beach Blvd. produces warm water as a byproduct as it produces electricity. That warm water is discharged into the canal located at Manatee Park, attracting manatees trying to stay warm.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:
• Park Ambassadors answer questions about the park and the Fort Myers area.
• Rovers mingle with visitors around the park sharing knowledge and distributing manatee posters and educational workbooks for children.
• Educational Volunteers work with local school children visiting the park on field trips presenting educational programs.
• All About Manatees Programs for the public are presented daily.
• Gardening: Is gardening your thing? Manatee Park’s Butterfly Garden utilizes volunteers to help plant and beautify the area to attract beautiful butterflies.
