Pet of the Month

  • July 2026

Barbie and Jay Matthews were still mourning the passing of their beloved ten-year-old black Labrador. Their sadness was so deep that the thought of going through this with another dog would be more than they could bear. 4 1/2 years passed before the family made them realize that their hearts were full of love and ready to share with another dog. On a family trip to Mexico in beautiful Cabo, the decision was made. Barbie said this lab will be yellow, a girl and must be named Cabo, of course! They found just the puppy they were looking for in Southern Illinois. Of all the puppies in the litter there were three black males, two yellow males and only one yellow female! She was meant to be theirs. Cabo has truly been a delight for the Matthews the last seven years and without a doubt, she is the sweetest dog they’ve ever known.

Cabo is so smart that Barbie and Jay have to spell around her so she doesn’t know what they are saying (like, maybe, bath time?), but she knows everybody’s name in the family and is so excited when she sees the kids and grandkids that she cries and rolls over to have her belly rubbed every time!

A funny quirk about Cabo is she just doesn’t bark… she talks instead, and she is certain that we know what she is saying, and believe it or not, most of the time they do‼

Cabo summers in Michigan and winters here so she gets to spread her love around in two places!
