Take a stroll down Memory Lane for an overnight getaway to the Silvermoon Drive-in Theatre in Lakeland, Florida at 4100 New Tampa Highway.
Remember those evenings at the drive-in with your family or, better yet, with a date? Enjoy an evening of popcorn, pizza and candy while you watch one or both of the two large screens. Sit in your car or on the hood or bring your lawn chairs!
On the way, stop in at St. Armand Circle in Sarasota for a great lunch at The Columbia Restaurant or go to Tampa for a night in lovely Ybor City, known for its boutiques and vintage shops. Or you could easily go for the day and have a late-night drive home.
There are only four drive-in movie theaters left in Florida and we are lucky to have one of them nearby in Lakeland. The Silvermoon Drive-In has continuously operated since 1948, and they celebrated its 50th anniversary with a gala in 1998. One of the first movies shown there was “UP GOES MAIZIE” starring Ann Sothern and George Murphy. The admission of 35 cents per person included a short subject, a cartoon and the latest newsreel. The Lakeland Ledger stated that the theatre featured 357 individual R.C.A. speakers – a new innovation. An April 26-27, 1948 flyer advertised the theatre as “FLORIDA’S NEWEST MOST MODERN OUTDOOR THEATRE.” Now the Silvermoon shows first run movies for your watching pleasure. Oh, it should be noted that the admission price has gone up a bit! ENJOY!
